We hold regular socials to introduce you to our growing community. We value and enjoy
the opportunity to get together with each other and with you. Socials are scheduled twice a month in public and private settings,
usually the first Sunday of the month and another day near the middle of the month. We try to vary the day of the week and
the time of day for these gatherings in hopes that you will find dates and times that work for you.

July 13 -- Daybreak "De-planting" Day
We invited our future neighbors to come to the property to help us save dozens of plants before construction begins. Good tools and folks with lots of plant wisdom helped make our "De-planting" party a success. We were delighted to meet the neighbors and glad to see the roses, fuchsias, irises and many other plants going off to new homes right in the neighborhood.

July 12 – Mississippi Street Fair
We've got community! That was our message when we met community-minded folks at the Mississippi Street Fair on July 12. Kids played at our children's table while the adults chatted with us about the latest exciting developments at Daybreak. We met lots of people who are interested in building community and living a more sustainable lifestyle. We invited them to our next social at Arbor Lodge Park.

July 6 - Sunday social on our property
We were delighted by the good turnout for this social on a holiday weekend. Twelve new visitors came to meet us, see our location and learn more about Daybreak--including people from Central Oregon, Canada and Texas. |

July 5 - Portland Farmers Market at Portland State
Members of Daybreak talked to a steady stream of shoppers at the Portland Farmer's Market. We handed out information on all of Portland's six cohousing communities as well as the national Cohousing Association. Students, tourists and families were among the people who expressed interest. Many people were surprised that there were so many communities here in Portland.

June 16 – Weekday social at Blend

June 11 – Interstate Farmer’s Market
We spent an enjoyable afternoon meeting new friends and neighbors at the Interstate Farmer's Market in the Overlook neighborhood. Several neighbors shook our hands and welcomed us to the neighborhood! There was a lot enthusiasm for living a more sustainable lifestyle in a supportive community. "What a great idea!" was a refrain we heard many times. |

June 6 – A Bowling Sharing Supper
A team of five bowlers hit the hardwoods at Interstate Lanes. Senor Diablo (Ken) had consistently high scores and shared the top slot with Miss Count (Kristin). The Slammer (Scot), threw them down, getting a respectable number of spares. Sasquatch (Sterling) showed us how the left handers do it and mastered some good straight shots by the end of the evening. Plenty2Spare (Tiffany) had a hard time adjusting her bowling ball around her bowling ball belly and may be changing her nickname to "Bumper Babe". Interstate Lanes is close to the Daybreak site, has nice staff, and passable pizza. We've got enough for a team--howzabout an all-cohousing league?

June 1 – Social at Chapel Pub
Several new and old friends joined us at McMenamin's Chapel Pub. As usual, there was lively discussion with lots of questions. It was delightful to share about the values we place on living in a socially supportive and sustainable community.

May 21 – Grace’s 2nd birthday party at Old Wives Tale

May 15 – Social at Our Future Home Site
Many friends, new and old, dropped by to visit us at the site of Daybreak's future home on a beautiful warm evening. We had a great time getting to know each other, relaxing on the grass and waving at neighbors passing by. It was easy to imagine sitting in our garden or on the terrace under the the big maple tree, strolling over to the Common House for a cup of tea and watching children run around in the play area. The apartments in the photo are empty and will be deconstructed before construction begins... very soon! |

April 25, 2008 - 'Sharing Supper' in Sarah's Garden
It was a magical night in Sarah's garden. She filled us up with great vegan food from Proper Eats and some very old Oregon wines. We had fun starting and maintaining the wood fire meant for both grilling and keeping us warm as the beautiful evening progressed. Several of us were grateful for the hot tub too! We had no problems visualizing ourselves doing the same thing up on our roof deck next year!
April 23, 2008 - Social at Blend
We filled up the back room at Blend with new visitors who came to find out more about Daybreak. We had met so many folks the weekend before, at Earth Day, and several of them came to find out more about Daybreak and cohousing in general. We talked a lot about the many sustainable features, both physical and social, that Daybreak has incorporated into its design and vision.

April 19, 2008 - Earth Day at Overlook Park
Portland's Earth Day celebration at Overlook Park was fun, cold and wet, with interludes of sleet, snow and sun! We had a great time meeting the crowds of community-minded people that stopped by our table to learn about Daybreak and cohousing. Even one of the mayoral candidates stopped by to chat. We also had fun with folks from Columbia Ecovillage, which had a lively booth right next door.

April 11, 2008 - 'Sharing Supper' at Terri's place
We had a "conversation-full" evening with a special visit from our friends Greg and Catalina. Food, drink, and much enthusiastic cohousing talk kept us all together late into the night.
April 6, 2008 - Social at Pause
More new friends joined us to find out more about Daybreak. Some had just learned about us from the story in the Overlook Views newsletter or a flyer at Bethel Lutheran Church in Overlook. Others had been on our mailing list for a while. As always, people talked about the desire for more connection with others. We learned during the social that the new sign announcing our future home just went up on our property.
March 27, 2008 - Sharing Supper at Julie, Matt, Mackenzie and Peyton’s
Was it the sangria, the singing, the good cheer, the great enchiladas from Matt and Mackenzie? All and more. Much fun and laughter, and great singing was shared. Oh and great food too.

March 25, 2008 - Daybreak Social at Chapel Pub
Nine people came to meet with us, plus babies! One topic that come up was how much support and fun we are already experiencing by being in community - and we aren't even living together yet.

March 14, 2008 - Sharing Supper at Navarre hosted by Tiffany
Has anyone noticed that our community loves to gather around good food? And it doesn’t have to be a potluck or in our homes! This event was our first restaurant outing as part of our Sharing Suppers. And Tiffany picked a great place for a crowd. Thankfully Navarre offers you the option to let them pick the food and wine. And they filled the table and us with unexpected delights while we enjoyed each other’s company.
March 2, 2008 - Social at Pause
A window seat on a sunny afternoon was the backdrop for this social not far from our future home as we hopped from table to table. Enthusiasm was high and contagious. Members chatted with several new and returning visitors from near and far, including New York, Korea and New Mexico! Visitors included several children and a guide dog in training accompanying his owner. |

March 1, 2008 - DT/MT Roadtrip to Corvalis Coho
Terri, Kristin, Rich, Chris and Martha were the recipients of wonderful cohousing hospitality at CoHo Ecovillage, the new cohousing community in Corvallis, on Saturday, March 1. We were fed a delicious breakfast in the Common House. Some of our group helped clean up while others were given a tour of the grounds and several homes. We spent most of our time in valuable meetings. Some of us met with Bruce (man on the left), one of the community founders, to discuss details about the development aspects of the project. And others met with a group of members who shared their experience with marketing and membership efforts. In the photo we are standing in the center of the common house; the wood seen here was milled from trees on the property.

February 29, 2008 - Sharing Supper at Laura and Erik's
We finally were able to meet one of Erik’s best friend’s Jennifer, a retired puppet. And we celebrated a surprising number of February and March birthdays, including Erik’s on March 1. (Scot, our true leap year baby, was celebrating with her family.) The baked potato and fixin’s theme was popular.
February 20, 2008 - Social at Sagittarius
We had our last social in February at a lively local gathering place in our soon-to-be new neighborhood. We met several new people looking for the support and interaction that comes with community. A photographer from a large local paper joined us, so keep your eyes open for Daybreak in the news! |

February 15, 2008 - Sharing Supper at Lorell's
Our Iron Chef coconut-themed night at Lorell’s colorful home began with coconut-laced rum drinks. And progressed through the evening with fun and dishes, and ‘colorful’ company.
February 3, 2008 - Social at Amesia Brewing
Because we were oblivious to the Super Bowl hoopla today, this was a perfect time for a Daybreak social. And the folks
at Amnesia were almost as nonchalant about it as we were. We had a lovely afternoon talking in-depth to our non-sports-oriented
friends!
January 24, 2008 - Social in Overlook Neighborhood
January 6, 2008 - Social at Ecomotion
The first Daybreak social of 2008 at Ecomotion started off quiet, with one guest, who had just learned about cohousing on
the Internet after seeing a cohousing bumper sticker in a Fred Meyer parking lot.
An hour into the social the meeting room was abuzz in conversation, with new as well as returning friends, including several
babies and young children and several families who have moved to Portland in the last year. Ken and Scot visited with folks
who are also recent arrivals from North Carolina. Overheard: "I used to visualize something like cohousing years ago,
before I knew the word for it."
 December 30, 2007 - Daybreak Anniversary Feast
Terri,
with the help of many community members. prepared a delicious Indian feast for the community's second anniversary! Nineteen
members took part and filled their plates.
We had two prep events to get the food prepared and decorate. Just a taste of the community meals to come!
See the photo album for more anniversary pictures. |
