December 3 - 6, 2010 Consensus Workshop with Laird Schaub
Laird facilitated the community through a number of sessions throughout the weekend. Dealing with tough issues. Practicing skills for conflict resolution. Facilitation and consensus skills in community meetings. He also worked with the Facilitators and Steering Team. Great community lunches and dinners to support our work. Hard work that bonded us in a different way than our recent fun retreat. Some community members even said this weekend was better than our retreat.

November 19-21, 2010 - Silver Falls Community Retreat
Our third community retreat. The first since we've moved in. The community journeyed to Silver Falls for a weekend of fun and bonding. Great activities and games by the Retreat Team. The Steering Team led us in a fun process to reconnect to our vision. Fabulous hikes at the Falls. A scavenger hunt under the full moon. Lots of games, singing, laughter and connection. We took a break last year because life was so crazy just before move-in. It was great spending a lazy afternoon together hanging out on the terrace, eating great food (as usual), and laughing as we played silly games on the grass.

With a table outside of Atomic Pizza we were in the middle of the action and had a great time meeting more of our neighbors, listening to great music, and chatting about cohousing. Jodi did a great job as a judge for the Dog Costume Contest. And Paul coordinated the music.

John started out the morning with a continental breakfast of Kettleman's Bagels and more for the set-up folk and everyone else. We had a tent on the Delaware side of the property directly on the route to offer free water and tire pumping. The Overlook Neighborhood Association and the Overlook Village Business Association also had tables with us. It was a great day connecting with our visitors and neighbors.

June 16 - 20, 2010 National Cohousing Conference
Terri, Kristin, and Xander took the conference by storm. Okay, Xander did. He stole the show. And in the meantime, Terri and Kristin met with folks from all over the world to chat about being in community and how to get there. Terri was an ambassador for the movement as a Board member and participated or presented in four sessions ranging from the nuts and bolts of financing projects to the importance of creating community glue with FUN and meals programs. We met with old friends and made many new ones. We also brought back many ideas to discuss and explore!

It would be hard to top dinner. But we might have. At one point, we had four tables with five games going. Even community members NOT participating in the games commented about the fun of hearing our noise. Scrabble, Sets, Sorry, Backgammon, Clue, Apples to Apples, Yahtzee. And we didn't even make a dent in our game collection.

Jodi and Chris pulled out all the stops for a fabulous spread and great sangria.
June 10, 2010 - Oregon Strawberry Shortcake Night
Baird and Karen inaugurated the beginning of the Oregon berry season with limitless supplies of sumptious strawberries, shortbread, and whipped cream. So beautiful and decadent. Who needs dinner? I'm sure a tradition has been born. While we swooned over the strawberries, we also envisioned the raspberries, blueberries, blackberries, etc. to come and the desserts that will fill our summer. And we had laughter-filled tales about raccoon antics.

A 'lazy' day outside with easy conversations and 'small' projects evolved into dinner and a hot tub party on the roof terrace. Sweet.

Most of the vegetable starts went in. Tomatoes and peppers are up on the roof terrace deck. Lots of weeding, mowing, and organizing. And a rejuvenating lunch as Lena and Terri finish clearing out the refrigerator.
May 25, 2010 - Ninkasi Release Party and Leftover Night
Hope and Vine hosted the release party for Ninkasi's Radiant Summer Ale just a short stroll down the street. Such a sweet deal. And then we returned to the Common House to start to make a dent in some of the leftovers from the FIC weekend. And fresh strawberry-rhubarb crisp!
May 20 - 22, 2010 - FIC Meeting
Daybreak and its Common House is filled with representatives from communities throughout the country, thus community spirit and food. A large gathering between the regular Daybreak social and the FIC Soiree on Thursday. Mark Lakeman from City Repair and Communicature shared community building visions on Friday evening.

Portland Rocks! Voted best tour area ever! Okay I exaggerate just a little AND we were given a big thumbs up from the tour participants. The communities gave the tour lots of support, home-made snacks, enthusiasm, and great weather.

Sarah took us through several hilarious and inspirational team building games. Turning over a very small tarp that we all were standing on kept Sarah and our neighbors very amused. And we did turn it over!
April 22, 2010 - PDX-Plus Cohousing Meeting
Our quarterly collaboration meeting among Portland communities was hosted by Cascadia Commons. We discussed plans for the upcoming bus tour and talked about our Meals Programs. Lots of energy there, so we'll be talking more about food. The Facilitators Salon is coming June 12.
April 20, 2010 - Pasta Night
Pasta nights are popular. The spaghetti with white clam sauce was a big hit. Razor clams from my friends near Long Beach harvested and cleaned (ugh!) with love were definitely the key.
April 18, 2010 - Consensus Training
Daybreak was the host location while Columbia EcoVillage was the host organizer for a day long consensus training with Brush from TLC Farm. CEV, Daybreak, and Trillium Hollow community members participated. A great collaboration among communities and a great day! Thank you all.
Daybreak concluded with a potluck dinner and a debrief session. And many of us reconvened to socialize on the roof terrace. Hot tub included. A very full community weekend.
April 17, 2010 - Grand Opening Celebration
What a great day struttin' our stuff! Community excited! Neighbors. Friends from other communities. Great, short, welcoming speeches from wonderful representatives of our larger community. Stephandie Noll, BTA. Jenna, Overlook Village Business Association. Craig Ragland, Executive Director Cohousing Association US. Amanda Fritz, Portland City Councilwoman. The weather held when we were all outside. Terri cried as expected. Lots of laughter to share. Touring. Food. Lovely harp music from Elizabeth Nicholson. And then a potluck with more food. And an impromptu party on the terrace after we cleaned up. Ahhh! Lots more pictures here!

March 20, 2010 - Bringing in the Dirt Work Party
Two yards of dirt and seven yards of compost got delivered on Friday. On a beautiful, sunny Saturday the community grabbed shovels, buckets, and wheelbarrows and moved ALL of it from the street and into the front vegetable garden and to the back yards of two residents. Wheelbarrows going through Laura's home to get to her back yard was an interesting sight. Garden paths and beds are now defined. Planting very soon.

Almost 50 people came together to chat about their interest in community. We had a very brief overview of different community models: traditional cohousing, small communities, and retrofit communities. Each of us gave a brief introduction and provided information about our specific interests. From the intros we created 4 break-out sessions: forming community next steps, small community, farming-focused community, and communication in community. We agreed to meet about every two to three months. We'll have specific topics for upcoming meetings. And we formed a googlegroup to help everyone connect in the meantime.

While our Spiritual Space is getting regular use for personal practice, tonight for the first time we used the space in a group practice as Regula made an offering of her Yoga Nidra practice to many weary souls that appreciated the relaxation and rejuvenation.

Although we're having a mild winter, celebrating the warmer climes. Sweet potato and coconut milk gratin, avocado and cucumber salad, spice cake, and more.

Daybreak hosted the meeting this month. We got to show off our Common House and community to a very appreciative audience of fellow cohousers. Our meeting focused on collaboration between Treasurers/Finance Teams and Facilitation Teams. Cascadia Commons will host the next meeting in April.
